Smorgon Steel Wire Products has capacity of 60,000 tonnes of wire per annum. About 85% of this is galvanised and the remainder is bright wire. Production is centred at the wire drawing and galvanising plant adjacent to Smorgon Steel Mill at Laverton, Victoria.

About 40% of the bright and galvanised wire from Smorgon Steel Wire Products is sold to Smorgon Steel Reinforcing and Welded Mesh for the production of security and domestic fencing. Another 40% is sold through the Group's rural business, Smorgon Steel Rural.

Wire products are also sold to external customers for use in various applications such as general wire working, upholstery, electrical transmission, hardware and packaging.

In 1995 Smorgon Steel entered into a technology and supply agreement with Trefil ARBED Bissen S.A. of Luxembourg to manufacture long lasting galvanised wire - LifeWire (TM). The parties have also entered into a supply and manufacturing know-how agreement for steel wire fibre for use in concrete reinforcing.
