Earlier in the year, Smorgon Wire was contacted by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to assist them with a breeding programme for the endangered Northern Hairynosed Wombat. With only 100 Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats left in the world, the Australian marsupial is Queensland's most endangered mammal (or one of the 10 most endangered mammals in the world.) To prevent extinction of the species a major recovery programme is underway.

September 15, 2002 Smorgon Enters Joint Research Project with Deakin University
The Laverton Steel Mill has entered into an exciting research agreement with Deakin University. The research project is to develop a model to predict the properties of hot rolled bar. This model will then be used to help optimize process routes, reduce alloy costs, and improve product performance and fast track product design.
